Closure/Delay Communication

Winter Weather: School Closures and Delays

A yellow school bus is parked in front of text that reads 'SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS', with snowflakes falling.

With the arrival of winter weather, we wanted to remind parents of the procedures and schedules the District will follow in the event of a closing or delay of school. Please read the procedures carefully as the availability of Flexible Instruction Days (FID) for remote instruction has expanded the instructional opportunities available to our students on inclement weather days.

The District makes decisions regarding closures and delays with the input of the Public Works Department, Peters Township Police and the District's Transportation Department. As a parent, if you chose not to follow the District's plan regarding inclement weather, please note that you have the authority to keep your child at home for an administrative excused absence anytime there are weather concerns

  • In the event of a two-hour delay, the following will take place:

    • ALL students will follow a delay schedule for instruction.
      • Delay Schedules may be found here:
        • PTHS
        • PTMS
        • McMurray - School begins at 10:55 a.m.; specific schedules will be shared by homeroom teachers.
        • Bower Hill & Pleasant Valley - School begins at 11 a.m., specific schedules will be shared by homeroom teachers.
        • The Modified Kindergarten Schedule for a 2 hour delay is as follows:
          • For AM students: 11:00 am to 12:50 pm
          • For PM students: 1:35 pm to 3:25 pm

In the event that conditions worsen unexpectedly and we need to close school for in-person instruction after a delay is called, all students will attend school remotely following the 2-hour delay schedule.

  • In the event that conditions require a full-day closure for in-person instruction, our ability to seamlessly switch to remote learning can help us avoid snow days that would need to be made up later in the year. If a full-day closure is needed, all students will attend classes remotely following the normal or delay schedule.

  • When necessary, school closings and delays will be communicated in a variety of ways. The District utilizes the School Messenger parent notification system to alert families to changes in our schedule via phone and email. The alerts are also posted on the local television news stations, the District website and facebook page.

If you need to update or make changes to contacts on file with the District, please log onto your parent PowerSchool account (on the computer only) and select the Year-Round Updates button. Get complete instructions for making mid-year changes here.

Please be sure to also review the contact information we have on file for your family in your parent PowerSchool account on the computer under School Messenger (select Preferences from pulldown menu).

Any phone number where you wish to receive notifications about delays or closings must have a check mark under the GENERAL setting. In the case of a sudden change in the weather that impacts our schedule, we may also use the NON-SCHOOL HOURS EMERGENCY numbers as well to be sure everyone is aware.

If you have any questions about delay/closing communication, please contact Shelly Belcher.
