Scholarships & Financial Aid

The Peters Township community, Washington County and the state of Pennsylvania provide many scholarship opportunities for our students on an annual basis. Sponsors contact the Counseling department each year with updated selection criteria, applications, due dates and submission instructions. As information and materials are received, the "Scholarship Search" page in Naviance will be updated. In order to help defray the costs of college, it is important for students to check this page often, especially during senior year. 

To find local scholarships in Naviance: Log into your Naviance Student account by using Clever. Click on the "Colleges" tab from the home page, and once the drop down menu appears, under "Scholarships & Money", click "Scholarship Search".

Scholarship Deadlines & Transcripts
Many scholarships will require a transcript in addition to the application. Students must complete the scholarship transcript form in the Counseling office and submit it to the counseling department secretaries at least three days prior to the deadline. This procedure ensures that scholarship applications requiring official school documents are processed accurately and in a timely manner.Please consider the following for scholarship applications that require an official transcript and/or counselor evaluation/written evaluation:

  • Be aware of deadlines. Some applications may state “post-marked” while others must be submitted by a specific due date. It may take several days for your request to be fulfilled depending upon the evaluation form & written evaluation requirements. It is important that the student read the scholarships' instructions carefully and plan accordingly.  
  • In the case that scholarship sponsors prefer the PTHS counseling office to collect the applications and pre-screen applicants, the scholarship may indicate an earlier submission date to the Counseling office. A pre-selected scholarship committee made up of PTHS employees will follow the criteria outlined by the sponsor that may include selecting one nominee to represent PTHS. Once a candidate has been selected, they will be notified by their counselor and their name will be submitted to the scholarship sponsors for consideration.

FAFSA

FAFSA (Free Application Federal Student Aid) is an office of the U.S. Department of Education. Federal student aid plays an essential role in supporting post-secondary education by providing money for college to eligible students and families.  

  • You must complete & submit a FAFSA form to apply for federal student aid for college, career training, and for most state & institutional aid. The quickest way to apply is by creating an account and following the instructions on Fafsa

An Internet search of the word "FAFSA" may direct users to for-profit web sites offering to help you complete the FAFSA form for a hefty fee. Stick with free, federally-affiliated assistance in filing your FAFSA. Below are some reputable resources:

College/University financial aid offices use the information you provide on your FAFSA to determine your eligibility to receive federal student aid in the form of grants, loans, and work-study programs. You are encouraged to call your university's financial aid office to determine their specific financial aid programs and protocols.

Many Pennsylvania high school seniors who otherwise would have been eligible for a state or federal grant did not receive one because they did not file their FAFSA on-time. PHEAA

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is a Pennsylvania government funded agency which also provides assistance with filing the FAFSA. They have several helpful links on their website in addition to the ones we've linked on this webpage. PHEAA provides regional school representatives across the state of Pennsylvania. The Southwestern PA rep, Diona Brown, is an excellent resource who can assist PTHS families with questions they may have about filing their FAFSA or financial aid in general.
