1:1 Technology in Peters Township

For the 2020-2021 School Year every student in Peters Township will be issued a personal technology device. The information and links below will provide additional details on the devices and how they can be used by our students in the classroom and at home.
About the Devices

Internet Filtering with Lightspeed

The Peters Township School District has collaborated with Lightspeed Systems to provide onsite and offsite Internet filtering for its 1:1 initiative. Through the Relay and Relay Rocket solutions, student devices are filtered using flexible policies to ensure safety, Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliance, and policy enforcement on networked and mobile devices—on and off-campus. The Lightspeed Systems family of products analyzes and report on web activity, typed content, and multimedia across the web–including YouTube, Google search, online docs and social media. Families may link up to two parents/guardians to receive weekly Internet activity reports of student devices. Families can see when the web is being used, top sites, top searches, and more.

1:1 Technology: FAQ

HOW WILL STUDENTS BE USING THE LAPTOPS IN SCHOOL?
Teachers will continue to use laptops in ways they have prior to this year; however, access will not be a hindrance to lessons plans since every student will have a laptop available for use. Through on-going staff development, teachers are trained to use technology when appropriate in a lesson. There may be days when students do not use a laptop in class, lessons when laptops are necessary for a component of the lesson, and times when a laptop will be necessary for an entire activity.

WHAT IF STUDENTS OR PARENTS DO NOT SIGN THE ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY AND/OR LAPTOP AGREEMENT?
If students and/or parents refuse to sign and Acceptable Use Policy, a device will not be issued to the student for at-home use.

DOES THIS INITIATIVE MEAN MY CHILD WILL NEVER USE A PENCIL, PAPER, OR BOOKS AGAIN?
No, having a District-issued laptop does not mean these other materials will not be used again. There are times when the laptop is the appropriate instructional tool and others when it is not. Traditional tools such as pencils, paper and post-its may be more effective toward learning goals than technology tools. Teachers will continue to seek the appropriate balance of how/when to incorporate a variety of instructional resources including district-issued laptops.

WHEN WILL DEVICES BE ISSUED?
A District email blast will be sent in August with details regarding pickup dates, times and procedures.

WHO OWNS THIS DEVICE AND ACCESSORIES?
The District owns the device and the accessories. Staff has the right to confiscate the device at any time for any reason.

MAY MY CHILD PERSONALIZE THE DISTRICT DEVICE, CASE OR OTHER ACCESSORIES?
No, the District owns the device and its accessories. A label will be placed on the laptop by the District; It must be returned at the end of the school year in the case it was distributed with and with the provided accessories (pen and charger).

WHAT DOES THE DEVICE COST?
There is no fee for use of these devices. Incidents of abuse or intentional damage may result in the full repair cost being billed to the Student and Parent/Guardian. Lost accessories such as power adapters and pens are not covered.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DEVICE NEEDS REPAIR?
The Student and Parent/Guardian understand and agree that they will not attempt any repairs on the Laptop and that damage must be reported to the school. It is important not to delay as one problem can lead to another if not solved right away. If your device is damaged, we will fix it or send it out for repair. Under no circumstances should you or anyone else take the device to a third party for repair.

WHAT DOES MY CHILD DO IF THE DEVICE IS STOLEN?
In the event the laptop is stolen or otherwise not returned to the District while in the custody of the Student, the Student and Parent/Guardian agree they will be responsible to the District for the replacement cost unless a police report is timely filed. Lost or stolen laptops must be reported to the school principal or designee within 48 hours and police reports must be provided to the District within one week. Failure to abide by these procedures will result in the full replacement cost being billed to the Student and Parent/Guardian.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING THE DEVICE HOME?
Yes, students will need the device at home to complete assignments, prepare for assessments and collaborate with classmates.

CAN MY CHILD TRAVEL WITH THE DEVICE ON FAMILY VACATIONS OR OUTINGS?
Yes, students may bring the device on family vacations and outings.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE INTERNET ACCESS AT HOME?
If there is no internet access at home, please contact the Technology Department for available solutions. (click here to email Mr. Swinchock

WILL MY CHILD'S INTERNET ACCESS BE FILTERED FROM INAPPROPRIATE MATERIAL AT HOME?
Yes. The laptop will be filtered at home the same way it is filtered at school. Our Lightspeed filtering systems blocks social media and inappropriate content.

CAN OTHER MEMBERS OF MY HOUSEHOLD USE THE DEVICE?
Students should not permit individuals other than District personnel and their parent/guardian to access the Laptop. The Student agrees not to use or allow the Laptop to be used for any illegal reasons or other reasons prohibited by School Board Policy.

WHERE DOES MY CHILD KEEP THE DEVICE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?
Students will keep their devices with them throughout the school day.

ONCE THE DISTRICT DEVICE IS ISSUED, CAN MY CHILD USE A PERSONAL DEVICE RATHER THAN A DISTRICT ONE?
No, students must use their District issued device to maintain consistency with technology being used in the classroom.
