Zero - an Art of Listening Project

January 2012 - Initial planning. The team meets to choose appropriate pairings for music, art and literature. For the project described here, these pairings were agreed upon

February - Thank you to the volunteers that support our school and help make it a special place! Mrs. Scarton assists by scanning and cropping necessary illustrations from the book.

March - Initial introduction of kid involvement. In order to animate the illustrations of the story, children in the enrichment program start creatively planning scenarios that could be created through stop motion animation to bring the narrative of the story to life in a video format. Technical logistics are addressed. Stop motion animation will require two ipads synced to each other on a dedicated wireless network. The IT department was very helpful in enabling this!

April - The real work begins!
The primary narrator of the story is Mr.s Gustafson. She recorded the entire story first, and student voices will be overdubbed speaking the parts of the characters in the story.

Students Trey and Bridgette begin the process of animating the illustrations from the story. Stop motion is essentially the process by which Gumby videos were made. Technology has made this technique far more accessible! Two ipads are paired with each other, one takes the photos, the other converts them into an animated movie. The app that is allowing this to occur is istopmotion. Bridgette was triggering the camera to take a picture, Trey then moved the illustrations just a touch, then the process was repeated. Their first session totalled 56 photos taken, which generated 4 seconds of animation, one of the eight pages that will be animated in this method.
