As one of
the highest performing high schools in the state, it is our goal to continue to
offer a rigorous breadth of coursework for ALL students. This means
preparing more students for advanced academic work at the honors and Advanced
Placement (AP) levels. Whether it is one class or many, participation in
AP courses significantly improves a student’s college readiness. To help
meet that goal, we have partnered with the National Math and Science Initiative
(NMSI) to provide robust training for our staff and incentives to our
students. Students will have access to the best instruction, additional
tutoring, and monetary incentives.
National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI): NMSI is a national
nonprofit organization that supports districts in developing college readiness
through improving teacher effectiveness and student performance in critical
subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. As part of a
partnership with NMSI through the 2017-2018 School Year, students enrolled in
math, science, technology, and English AP courses will receive additional
support with extra tutoring sessions, administration/scoring of mock AP Exams
and supplemental Saturday Study Sessions. In addition, NMSI will
subsidize half the fee of the AP Exam and provide monetary incentives of
$100.00 per AP Exam score of 5 and $50.00 per AP Exam score of 4 in the
participating AP courses. For more information about the NMSI organization, you
can visit their website: http://www.nms.org/.
Three
focused study sessions are offered for each AP subject in the content areas of
English, math, and science. These sessions run from 8:00-12:00 and will
include students from multiple districts in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Each session is run by state and national AP experts. Classroom teachers
are invited to attend and observe these sessions. Transportation will be provided by the District for those who request it.
